Set of two volumes of Russian edition of "IN DEFIANCE OF FATE" - memoirs by Canadian engineer Vladimir Rott - got into the hands of the Head Librarian at the Mysovaya station in Buryat-Mongolia. The librarian from the distant Siberian village on Lake Baikal wrote a letter to the author "Thank you, that through your book the world has learned of the existence of our village. We discovered the fact that, at the end of the 19th Century, Mr. Guterman lived in our village with his large family. Unfortunately, we have never heard even their names in our region. If you could share with us any photos or documents from that period we would gratefully add for our museum one extra page to the history of Mysovaya."

The author and his Buryat-Mongolia born wife Iya, whose mother Rachel was the ninth child in Guterman's family, travelled from Canada to Lake Baikal. They decided to find out why her grandfather - Shlomo Haim Guterman, fleeing the pogroms in Poland in 1896, - landed at the Mysovaya station in distant Siberia?

The outcome of that visit resulted in the discovery not only of the history of a once large Jewish community (1,600 people in 1907), which has ceased its existence there today, but also in a dramatic ending after the Canadian guests departed, one of the last Jews of the village, the great-grandson of Guterman, died in the local village hospital. The noble Russian people working with librarian Таisya Chernykh, who has downloaded from Google information about the procedures for the appropriate Jewish funeral, - buried the deceased in Siberian soil with due respect and dignity
